the jobufit sitting tips

“A man is as young as his spinal column.”
— Joseph H. Pilates

“Sitting is the New Smoking” seems to be the buzz phrase of the season. Yes, sitting all day long is NOT what our bodies were created or designed for, but it is also a necessary evil. For example, many of us need to sit in a car to get to and from work and that travel can be a large percentage of our day.

So, if sitting is so bad for us, how do we combat this ‘new smoking’ epidemic?

The solution of the season: Standing Desks.

StandingVsSitting

Everywhere I look people are installing standing desks and telling me, “it’s been a week and I feel wonderful.” “A week? Wow,” I respond. “How many weeks a year do you work?!” You should see the looks I get. But, we must acknowledge that the opposite of sitting in an office is standing, and standing to the extreme (meaning standing all day) is going to have negative effects on our bodies also.

So, what’s the JōbuFIT solution for all seasons? Learn to ...

My 3 morning stretches:

Once I began adding these three, one minute-long stretches I felt more aware, physically even and long, and my roommate stopped with the silly remarks because my weird 1st steps were gone!

Give these morning stretches a try. Your Body with thank you.

The 1st Stretch: The Roll Down

My feet hit the floor and I do a sitting roll down: this is great to elongate the spine without putting immediate stress on the hamstrings (hamstring ...

4 MINDSET TOOLS FOR THE STRESSED OUT PROFESSIONAL

29 January by Alessa Caridi

Our professional mindset can be a powerful tool in the workplace; it can help us power through projects efficiently, it can help our attitude towards interpersonal officeplace relationships, it can even prevent body pain. Yes, you heard me correctly, having a positive mindset can help keep away body pain.

How, you may ask?

When your mind is in a good place – well rested, free from negative thoughts, and properly stimulated- it tends to be less stressed. When you mind is less stressed your body can endure more physically.

The opposite is also true. When your body is well rested, and properly positioned and nourished you mind stays healthy and productive. Read more on this Spiral of Stress.

Sitting is a hard work. Sitting poorly can be a pain in the neck, shoulders, back, and so on… and let’s face it, sitting isn’t going out of style any time soon.

I could toss around big scary words like kinematics and presenteeism or talk about the debate on whether posture is an innate characteristic or a response to our physical environment because that’s what doctors and researchers have been doing for the last 30+ years.

So where does this all leave us? With a heck of a lot of people talking about the pain that we shouldn’t have to live with. For example, US News. They report forward head posture as one of the 10 ways poor posture can harm your health… and work day. This posture problem, UN News reports, “can lead to tightening of some muscles and weakening of other”. “Leading to [neck and shoulder] pain and even tension headaches.” We all know that sitting is the new smoking and there is no way around sitting. We have to sit to travel to and from work, we sit while on t...
